Nigeria`s Consul General (CG) In South Africa, Amb. Godwin Adama, on Tuesday, urged Nigerians in that country to remain law abiding and resist being lured into crime.

He said, in Johannesburg, that while the mission was working hard to protect their interest, Nigerians should stay away from crime.

Adama said that Nigeria`s new high commissioner to South Africa, Amb. Ahmed Ibeto, had consistently been in touch with the Consulate on the welfare of the people.

“The new high commissioner has been concerned with the welfare of Nigerians in South Africa. The mission has also been trying its best to ensure that our people here are good ambassadors.

“However, one advice we give to Nigerians in South Africa is to stay away from crime. One of the critical challenges we have here is the involvement of our people in crime.

“Unless we sort this area out, there will always be conflict with the law enforcement agencies. We also urge the police not to be high handed in their approach because it leads to the death of Nigerians,” Adama said.

The CG said that since the visit of Nigeria`s ministers of Foreign Affairs and Internal Affairs to South Africa, xenophobic related incidents had reduced.

“Their visit to South Africa yielded positive results because calm and normalcy is in place here,” he said. (NAN)
