There was tension in Oke-Baale area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital, yesterday after a policeman allegedly shot dead a man, Segun Emir at Gbeja football pitch.

Daily Sun gathered that the victim was allegedly shot in the chest when he and other people around questioned the police officers after one of them allegedly slapped him (the deceased) over an argument.

A witness said the deceased was rushed to a private hospital near the scene of the incident but was rejected due to the degree of the injury sustained.

He was immediately rushed to Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), Osogbo, where he later died. 

The news of his demise sparked protests by the youths of the area.  As at the time of filing this report, the entire community where the incident occurred had been barricaded by the irate youths.

The youth prevented vehicular movement while the pedestrians were cautiously moving to their various destinations with palpable fear of attack.  

The Police Public Relations Officer, Folasade Odoro, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fimihan Adeoye, has ordered an investigation into the matter.

Odoro explained that the deceased was among the touts that attacked a police patrol team and prevented the policemen from rescuing some people who made a distress call to the police. 

Odoro said: “We received a distress call that over 50 thugs led by Akaje, Ora and Epo were harassing innocent people at Aloyunkewu, Imole, Alaafia Street, Lion Junction, Ori Eeru, Oke Allahu all at Oke Baale area in Osogbo and that people’s lives were in danger.

“Policemen were deployed to the scene to rescue the people and when the police patrol team got there, the thugs attacked the policemen with dangerous weapons.

Mr Adeoye, has ordered a full scale investigation into the matter.”
