The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Hassan Bello, has said that one of the most crucial components of successful international business transaction is accurate documentation.

Speaking in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Bello said that NSC has not only acted as arbiter but has provided a level playing ground for competing interests in the port sector by managing transition to a competitive market and has been fair to all parties through procedural transparency.
The NSC boss spoke at the one day enlightenment seminar on the “Imperative of Proper Documentation in Import\Export Transactions: The Stakeholders Challenge”, organised by the council’s South East zonal coordinating office and held in Owerri.

According to him, “the main objective of this seminar is to equip and enlighten Imo State stakeholders on basic information required for proper documentation in international trade transactions and to ensure that they are not left out in the scheme of the activities of the council.”
He added that failure to provide accurate documentation can hinder the dispatch of products by manufacturer or supplier and ultimately impede the timely receipt of goods by the customer. In more severe cases, business owners can be subjected to fines or incarceration for failing to comply with import\export documentation requirements.”

Earlier in her remark, Mrs. A. Okolue, South East Zonal Coordinator of the council, said the seminar was significant to the activities of NSC as it is expected to promote dialogue and facilitate discussions on the imperatives of proper documentation in import\export transactions, as well as highlight the risk factors associated with non-compliance.
