Kano State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abudulahi Abbas, has resigned his position.
Although no official explanation was offered by the party as at yesterday, an aide to the Kano State Commissioner of Information, Alhaji Faizu Alfindiki, confirmed his resignation to the media.
The former party chairman, who was appointed in an acting capacity about two years ago, has since been appointed as Commissioner by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
He has been screened and cofirmed by the House of Assembly and awaits his portfolio.
Daily Sun investigation showed that the state APC Publicity Secretary, Bashir Yahaya Karaye, has been pencilled down to take over from Abbas, although in an acting capacity.
Karaye’s appointment is expected to be approved by the national headquarters of the APC.
It was also discovered that the former state party chairman was prevailed upon to resign, by party leaders, due to a “legitimacy problem,” against the backdrop of the manner of his appointment.
A party source told Daily Sun that Abbas, as the chairman of the party during the forthcoming APC primaries, may pose a threat to candidates that would be fielded in elective positions “as the opposition could capitalise on an alleged legitimacy problem to snatch their victories in court.
“Following that realisation, leaders of the party resolved to source for a neutral person from within the state executive to head the party, during the forthcoming primaries.”
Efforts to speak with Abass and Karaye were unsuccessful. They refused to answer calls to their mobile lines, yesterday evening.
