Three unemployed men on Wednesday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State over alleged theft of 96 bottles of wine valued at N4.45 million.
The accused, Roland Ogamune, Paul Yohawannah and Odey Thompson, aged 34, 24 and 26, respectively, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
According to the prosecutor, Mr J.I. Eboseremen, the accused burgled a wine shop and stole the bottles on Feb. 3 at Grace Anjou Drive, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Eboseremen said that the shop belonged to Chief Bernard Imarah.
“They went to the shop at night, broke the padlocks and carted away the bottles of wine.
“They took drinks such as Remy Martins, Hennessy, Black Label and Ace Champagne, the very expensive ones,” he said.
He noted that the offences contravened Sections 207, 309 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that burglary at night attracts life imprisonment.
The accused, whose addresses were not provided, however, pleaded not guilty.
Chief Magistrate P.A. Ojo granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Ojo adjourned the case until June 27 for mention.
