In a report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), yesterday, it was established that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) received 11,703,709 applications between 2010 and 2016 and, out this number, only 2, 674,485 students, representing 23 percent, were admitted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, between 2010 and 2015.
The NBS report also indicated that over the seven-year period, Imo State recorded the highest number of applications and admissions but, in terms of percentage, Yobe State had the highest admission as a percentage of total applications made.According to the NBS report, in 2010, for instance, a total of 1,513,940 applications were received while 423,531 students were admitted with Imo, Delta, Anambra emerging as states with highest applications while Adamawa, Niger and Sokoto had the highest ratio of admission-to-application.
The NBS also said in the report that Adamawa and Niger states, which received 14,483 and 16,556 applications, respectively, admitted 5,678 and 6,278 students, representing 38 percent of the total number of students who sat for the examination in both states in 2010.
The NBS report further noted that in 2011, 1,636,356 applications were received while 417,341 students, 26 percent of those who applied for JAMB got admissions across the 36 states and the FCT in that year with Yobe’s record of 7,879 applications, out of which 3,185 students, equivalent to 40 percent got admissions, making it the state with least application.
The lowest percentages of application-to-admission were recorded in 2013 and 2014, with 24 percent and 25 percent of application-to-admission recorded, respectively, during the period under review.
Also, in 2013, Yobe emerged the state with the highest percentage of application-to-admission, having 11,222 applications out of which 4,084 students, representing 36 percent, got admission while Jigawa, with 16,214 applications and 6,169 admissions had the highest percentage of application-to-admission, with 38 percent recorded in 2014. The highest percentage of application-to-admission was recorded in 2015 with 30 percent of application-to-admission recorded. Yobe, with 17,461 applications and 9,703 admissions had the highest percentage of application-to-admission in the year, with 56 percent recorded.
Yobe, Adamawa and Jigawa top the list of states with the highest percentage ratio of admission-to-application while Imo, Delta and Oyo recorded the highest number of applications while Imo emerged as the state with the highest number of students admission in 2015. Although the admission process for 2016 is being computed, Imo, Oyo and Ogun recorded the highest number of students seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
