Chairman of Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Fabian Ntung, has announced the postponement of Local Government Elections in the state to an indefinite date following the security challenges that bedeviled the state.

PLASIEC had earlier fixed February 17, 2018, for the conduct of Local Government Elections in the 17 local government areas of the state and preparations were in top gear towards the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

But Ntung , in a U-turn said, “The General public, and particularly stakeholders in the political process in the state, are hereby informed that the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission  (PLASIEC) is in receipt of a communication from the Plateau State Security Council stating that the present security atmosphere in the state generally, is not conducive for the conduct of the forthcoming Local Government Council Election which is scheduled for Saturday 17 February, 2018.

“In line with the foregoing advise, the Commission wishes to inform the general public, especially stakeholders in the political process in the state, that the Local Government Council Elections in the state which was earlier scheduled for Saturday, 17 February, 2018 is hereby postponed until further notice.”

Hon. Ntung expressed grief that the commission was ready for the conduct of the election and sensitive and none sensitive materials printed and ready before the communication from the State Security Council.

He assured the participating political parties and the public that as soon as the commission is advised on the conducive nature of the security atmosphere in the state, a new date for the elections will be announced.

Ntung conducted Journalists round the commission head office office in Jos and show them all election materials that suggested that the commission was ready for the conduct of the election.
