Members of Onicha Igboeze Progressive Forum (OIPF) in Lagos recently converged on Ebonyi State House, Maryland, Lagos, for the coronation of Chief Jude Nwachuwku as Omereroa 1 of Onicha Igboeze.
Those at the event were gaily attired in their traditional attire as they danced and displayed their rich culture to the delight of guests. Sunny Campala and Egwu Ogene passionately reeled out indigenous songs as they thrilled the guests.
Chairman of the occasion, Nwaka Arisi, said it was a day for the celebration of culture, adding that culture was very important to the development of the society.
“Some people have embraced western culture, which is inimical to their culture. When people forget their culture, their identity is lost. I urge people to embrace and teach their children their culture,” he said.
Arisi, who was also given an award in recognition of his good leadership qualities and contribution to the union, said his award was in recognition of his contributions towards the development of his community, both in Lagos and in the village. “I have trained young Igbo men in various businesses and today, they are successful in their own trades and are making giant strides,” he informed.
Describing the host as a man of integrity, Arisi cautioned Nwachukwu to remain humble, helpful to people and take good advice from elders.
In his speech, Nwachukwu described the occasion as a special day that would remain indelible in his memory. He pledged to represent the Igbo communities in Lagos, asking God to help him fulfil the mandate given him by his kinsmen.
General Secretary of the union, Samuel Enyi said the day was one of unity and prosperity for the indigenes of Onicha Igboeze in Lagos and all Igbo men and women.
“The culture of the people has been brought to the fore, and it is on display here. Our culture is respected both in the village and in Lagos,” he noted.
Wife of the celebrant, Joy Nwachukwu described her husband as a determined man who was never deterred by challenges.
Special guest of honour, Chief Ogbonnaya Nwinyinya Aguene, also extolled Nwachukwu’s virtues.
“Chief Nwachukwu is a humble man,” he said. “He did not use his influence to get the position. He has lived in the United Kingdom for some years and decided to come back to Nigeria to settle down and help his community. He should be accommodating and continue to be helpful to his people,” he counseled.
