A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Mercellinus Nlemigbo on Monday escaped death when armed men who had laid siege at his country home shot dead one of his police orderlies and injured another. His driver was abducted.
The armed men laid siege to his home at Umudagu Mbieri in Mbaitoli council area,  unknown to the occupants of the house.
Immediately the armed men sighted his SUV jeep and as soon as one of the police guards who had alighted from the vehicle to open the  gate for the jeep to drive into the compound, they shot him, leaving him in a critical condition.  The gunmen shot the police Inspector, who was in mufti and reportedly sitting at the back of the car and mistook him as Chief Nlemigbo.
The source stated that on learning of the murder of one of his police orderlies, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic party fled.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public  Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew  Enwerem (DSP), said the assailants had shot dead an Inspector and left the other police guard a sergeant, critically wounded.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu,  is investigating.
