•Promises Nigerians safety, as Arase bows out

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIGP), Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina said the new IGP hails from Kutigi, Lavun in Niger State (North-West).
Idriswas born on January 15, 1959. He was enlisted into the police force in 1984, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Zaria with a Bachelors degree in Agriculture. He also holds a degree in Lawfrom the University of Maiduguri.
Adesina said the new IGP has served in various commands and formations in the force, working in the Police Mobile Force for 17 years as Unit Commander, Squadron Commander, and Commandant.
He was also a Commissioner of Police (CP) in Nasarawa and Kano states, as well as CP, Mobile Force at the Force Head- quarters.
The presidential spokesman said Idris, who until his appointment was in charge of Operations at the Force Head- quarters, will act as IGP pending his confirmation.
President Buhari met Idris, who was led into Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja at 2.21pm by the outgoing IGP Solomon Arase.
Speaking to Correspondents after the meeting, Idris assured that by collective leadership, the police force will be governed by internationally-recognised core values of policing.
“That is the issue of integrity and accountability, issue of respect for diversity, issue of compassion, issues of ensuring that our streets, our neighbourhoods, our communities re- main safe.
“We are going to do every- thing possible to ensure that we provide the best service to
this country,” the new Acting IGP said.
Earlier, Arase appealed to Nigerians to give Idris the same co-operation he enjoyed.
He said, “I want to formally introduce my successor, AIG Idris, he is going to be in acting capacity until the Police Council confirms.
“I want to seize this opportunity to thank Nigerians for the co-operation given me while I serve as Inspector General of Police, by extension, I want to also appeal to you to give the same support to my successor. He is a younger man, so, I am sure he will be abreast with the contemporary policing issues,” he said.
