TRAGEDY struck at Amaezike village, Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State when a 38-year old man, Benjamin Madubueze, murdered a 40-year old woman, Ifeyinwa Obarum with a machete. But an angry mob in the village immediately pursued the man, killed him and set his corpse and house ablaze.
It was gathered that the suspect, who was deported from Togo recently, allegedly committed the murder under the influence of drug.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nkiruka Nwode, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the incident, said the Divisional Police Station at Achara got a distress call over the murder of the woman and immediately moved to the scene.
According to her, “before the police could get to the scene of the incident, mobs have killed the suspect and set both his corpse and his building ablaze. The corpse of the woman, Ifeyinwa, and half burnt body of the suspect were deposited at Isuaniocha mortuary for autopsy.”
Nwode further stated that investigation was going on to ascertain the cause of the murder. She warned members of the public to desist from jungle justice, saying the people took laws into their hands by killing the suspect instead of handing him over to the police for prosecution.
She stated that those behind the killing of the suspect would be arrested and charged to court for prosecution to serve as deterrent to others in the society.
