With the emergence of the pandemic and consequent nationwide lockdown to minimize the spread of COVID-19, daily lives have been upended in a way no one anticipated. It has also created a paradoxical situation wherein stepping out poses a significant health concern due to the lurking virus, and staying indoors for a prolonged period is causing its own set of health issues.

Most of us have lost the motivation to work out since visiting gyms, swimming pools, and fitness studios are still not deemed completely safe and are best avoided. Model Kiara Moon states, “It is even more important now to take care of physical health as leading a sedentary lifestyle has a detrimental impact on overall well-being. Exercising is also beneficial to boost the immunity system and improve mental health.” Moon shares five tips that have enabled her to stay in phenomenal shape during the pandemic:

Workouts at home

Many fitness experts have started online classes to teach bodyweight exercises that require minimal to no equipment. You can hire an online trainer or even adopt workout routines that are freely available on YouTube. Make your routine exciting and try something new such as yoga, Pilates, Zumba, dancing, or aerobics. Also, implementing a good stretching routine helps the body, mind, and spirit operate at its optimum level.

Utilize open spaces

You can indulge in outdoor physical activities such as walking, running, cycling, jogging, etc., in a wide-open space or a park near home, or even a hiking or trekking trip while taking proper precautions that include wearing a mask and maintaining social distance.

Set a goal

Consider setting a common workout goal to be met within a stipulated time with a friend or family member via Zoom. The challenge acts as a great motivating factor and keeps you on track to accomplish your physical health goals.

Eat healthy

Gorging on unhealthy food and drinks as we continue to work from home has become the new normal and poses immense health risks. Prepare a well-balanced meal that keeps you energized throughout the day and reduces unnecessary snacking and overindulgence. You can also infuse your water with fruits, ginger, cucumber, or lemon to add flavor and boost immunity.

Indulge in self-care

Prioritize yourself and take out some time every day to promote your mental health. Meditate, read, develop a new skill, or indulge in a hobby that helps you unwind and sleep well at the end of the day.
