Pep Guardiola will have to watch Manchester City’s first Champions League game of next season from the stands.

The Catalan was sent off at half-time during the second leg of his side’s quarter-final defeat to Liverpool for contesting an incorrect decision with the referee.

A UEFA ruling has handed a two-match suspension to Guardiola – with one game deferred for 12 months – that will keep him out of the dugout for City’s first group game.

His dismissal from the touchline in April marked the end of City’s efforts to turn their Champions League tie around.

Attempting to overturn a 3-0 deficit, the Blues got off to a perfect start when Gabriel Jesus slotted home in the opening minutes of the game and thought they had another just before half-time when Leroy Sane turned in.

However, the goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside and Guardiola saw his marching orders for publicly complaining about it with the referee. Liverpool went on to win the game 2-1.

“I said it was a goal when the ball was passed to Leroy Sane. That’s why he sent me off,” he said.

“I didn’t insult him, I just said it’s a goal, the ball came from Milner. He said, ‘oh the pass came from [James] Milner?’ And I said yes, it came from Milner.”
