Anambra Political Stakeholders Forum (APSF), has backed the calls for Anambra North Senatorial District to produce the next governor for the state.

The group urged all the political parties to choose their candidates from the district, but said that as a group, it had not taken any decision on the candidate to support as that will be after all the parties have conducted their primaries.

The groups’ chairman, Okey Umeano, said that for the sake of equity, the North senatorial district should be allowed to complete two tenures of eight years before the governorship position would move to another zone.

He said it is on the basis of ‘fairness and justice’ that his group has urged voters to vote for a candidate from the Northern senatorial zone.

Though Daily Sun cannot ascertain the veracity of his claims, Umeano says that some groups such as the Anambra state chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Association of Anambra Town Unions, and prominent individuals like former Vice President Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Obi of Onitsha Igwe Afred Achebe, and a former governor of the state Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezife have endorsed the zoning arrangement.

Umeano said: “Based on the popularity of the zoning arrangement, the governorship slot will be zoned to the South senatorial district which will also retain the seat for eight years and thereafter the central senatorial district will occupy the position for the same period

“This arrangement will further reduce political bickering, heavy financial expenditure in seeking elective political offices and as well increase competition among the component senatorial zones. This we believe strongly will engender stable political system and good governance”.
