Another 18 persons have reportedly died  as a result of outbreak of gastroenteritis at Dole- Kaina area of Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

  Daily Sun gathered that the 18 affected persons were among the 216 victims that were admitted at the Niger Republic border hospital at Dole -Kaina in Kamba area of Kebbi state.

Deputy Nursing Officer at the hospital, Mr. Lawali Saidu  who spoke to newsmen confirmed the deaths.

  He said that they were stooling and vomiting excessively when they were brought to the hospital but “they died while on treatment”.

The waterborne disease had, in the past one month, spread to several local government communities in the state and Dole Kaina, a border town area of Kamba with Niger Republic, is one of the badly hit areas in the state.

The Nursing officer explained that the hospital had been admitting and treating people on daily basis for the disease. 

“Yes, there is outbreak of cholera here. We lost 18 out of the 216 people that were brought here last week.”

   Following the outbreak of diarrhea in Kebbi, which has killed over 20 people,  the government reintroduced   monthly environmental sanitation.

  Commissioner for Information, Musa Hassan Kalgo confirmed this to newsmen, after the weekly state executive council meeting.

 Another 20 victims of diarrhea were reported dead in Tungar Buzu, Korama,  Samanaji and Keri communities in Shanga, Birnin Kebbi, Fakai and Koko/Besse local government areas.

…53 traders feared dead in boat mishap

About 53 traders from The Republic of Niger were feared dead,  among 100 passengers on board a boat, which capsized at Lolo area of Bagudo Local Government of Kebbi State, yesterday.

Daily Sun gathered that the traders, about 100, were going to Polo market before their boat capsized on the River Niger, at Bagudo town.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of Bagudo Local Government, Alhaji Muhammad Laura Zagga  disclosed that majority of the traders were from Gaya village, in Niger.

  “They were going to a market in  Lolo, before their boat capsized,” he reiterated and also disclosed that out of the suspected 100 traders on the boat, 47 of them were rescued alive while others are still missing. He added that Niger authorities have deplored 500 divers to search the River Niger for the missing persons.

  Acting Director General of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Abbas Rabiu, also confirmed the incident.

Rabiu described the incident as a disaster, and stressed that the traders were from Niger Republic.
