As Tuface, Waje, Cobhams shine @ Give-Back-Concert

It was fun and excitement at the Give-Back-Concert organized by Olori Wuraola, wife of the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Enitan Ogunwusi in support of orphanages last weekend at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Organised under the umbrella of House of Oduduwa Foundation, the concert was headlined by the likes of Tuface Idibia, Darey, Adekunle Gold, Waje, Cobhams, Sound Sultan, Kenny Blaq, Funbi and Lamboghini.

It was a night of glitz, glamour and razzmatazz and the venue was packed with socialites, captains of industry, Nollywood stars and high networking individuals. They included the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, billionaire businesswoman, Hajia Bola Shagaya; Senator Ita Giwa, Nike Osinowo, Erelu Dosunmu and Sisi Abah Folawiyo among a host of others.

Speaking on the occasion, Olori Wuraola expressed her dream: “I want to assist in the renovation of local orphanages and provide food and other items to orphans in the rural areas of Nigeria and across Africa. Orphans are society’s lost children. They are homeless; often a group without hopes. These children have lost their parents and families due to the devastating effects of war, drought, famine and economic hardship hence they are suffering from malnutrition, diseases and hopelessness. These vulnerable children face a disastrous future without our immediate intervention.”

Commending the Olori, a guest said: “It is little wonder the Olori has earned the sobriquet, Mother Theresa of our time. Her effort to draw the people’s attention to the plights of the less-privileged, especially in the south west zone is indeed laudable.”

More than 20 orphanages are expected to benefit from the proceeds of the concert.

Hope as AMP embarks on new insurance project

Despite the billions it generates annually, it is tragic that Nollywood has no insurance structure to support practitioners in times of crisis. And whenever they are sick, they have to go cap-in-hand, begging for funds for treatment and in the process, many have died because they were unable to save for the rainy day.

It is in this light that the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) has kick-started a new insurance policy for the industry.

Last week, representatives of AMP from across the nation gathered for the unveiling of the project at NAN Hall, National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. The event organized in conjunction with heads of guilds in Nollywood was tagged: ‘Nollycare: A Nollywood Health and Business Retreat’.

Speaking at the event, AMP president, Ralph Nwadike disclosed that Nollywood could be self-sustaining if practitioners would embrace opportunities available in health insurance schemes.

“Most filmmakers hardly pay attention to their health. With this health insurance/group life insurance, people will be able to treat themselves and insure their future by paying a token which will be tied to their dues so that if a health challenge comes up, they can be well taken care of. We have the support of some insurance companies and the Bank of Industry.

Also speaking at the event, actress, Hilda Dokubo bemoaned the daily work routine of the average entertainer and how it adversely affects their health.

For Chief Eddy Ugboma, Chairman, AMP Board of Trustees: “It has become disgraceful and embarrassing that whenever anyone of us falls sick, they run to one governor or the other for help, making us seem like beggars. This has to stop, that’s why we want to1make sure that we are all insured.”

Posers for comedian AY

That he has written his name in the sand of time is not in doubt. From humble beginnings, the comedian known as AY(Ayo Makun) has established himself as one of the most successful rib crackers in recent times.

And he surely knows his onions. In 2013, he raked in a whopping N300 million when his debut movie effort, ‘30 Days in Atlanta’ raised the bar at the box office. Last year, he released yet another flick, ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ and his latest effort, ‘10 Days in Sun City’ is billed to premiere shortly.

The question is, how does Nigeria benefit especially at this time of recession? In this  light, critics are saying it is time for AY to look inwards and shoot his first ‘Nigerian’ movie.

“There is no gain saying it. AY has made a name for himself. He is innovative and business savvy. He has taken the name of Nollywood far and wide and we are proud of him but the time is ripe foir him to begin to use his talents to project the Nigerian project. How about sho
oting films Like ‘10 Days in Obudu Ranch’, ‘A Trip To Yankari Games Reserve’, ‘30 days in Abuja’. The list is endless. We sincerely hope he will exploit this in his future works,” a critic, who craves anonimity observed.
