Floods wash away 7 in Nasarawa

…As community raises the alarm over threat gully erosion

From: Linus Oota, Lafia

Residents of Galadima along Emir of Lafia Palace in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have appealed to both the state government and the Federal Government to come to sae them from gully erosion threatening the area.

The community leader and chief Imam of the ancestral home of Angwan Galadima, Alhaji Mohammed Jibrin Ladi, who took our correspondent round the devastating areas, said the erosion had so far wipe away seven persons their early grave without corpse  found, while several houses while had been washed away too.

HE maintained that the only bridge linking the community was equally wash away by the floods which hindered school children from going to school.

Ladi also said that the self-help efforts of the community to control the floods proved abortive.
The Galadima further explained that despite their appeals to government at all levels, there was little or no concern shown towards their plight.

He, therefore, called on the state government to assist the community in addressing the environmental challenges facing them, noting that the environmental degradation facing the community was a real source of concern to the dwellers of the community.

He also came down hard on the lawmaker representing the area in the National Assembly, Hon. Dahiru Sarki, who he claimed promised to give the area a maximum attention by constructing a canal but has failed in his promised.
The chief Imam also stressed that both government agencies and politicians had been coming to see the level of damage caused by the erosion in the area, but none had shown any commitment towards the plight of the people.
Said he, “How I wish Governor Umaru Al-Makura can hear this. I am very optimistic that once he get to know about this development, he will definitely take his time to come over and see things for himself

“You see, recently a  family were completely  levelled down by this gully erosion up to this moment that I am talking to you we could not found their death bodies which included a husband ,wife and their kids when they were asleep in the night and there was heavy rain that very night and it takes their lives ” Galadima said
