From Judex Okoro, Calabar

SENIOR Staff Association of Communications, Transport and Corporations (SSACTAC), has urged the Federal Government to encourage the establishment of private refineries in the country to ease the unending product shortages.

Explaining its benefit to the nation, SSACTAC noted that the establishment of private refineries would complement the workforce of already established government-owned refineries and also put to an end importation of petroleum products.

The call, which was part of a 10-point communiqué issued by SSACTAC at the end of a special Delegate Conference recently in Calabar, frowned at the current fuel supply situation in the country, which has brought businesses to their knees and affecting Nigerians adversely.

The group bemoaned a situation where Nigerians now buy fuel for between N180 and N300, adding that the suffering has gone beyond control and must be checked to avoid further suffering.

The association, through the communiqué signed by its President and General Secretary, Muhammad Yunusa and Chile Ekeke respectively, decried the deplorable and near collapse of electricity generation and supply in the country.

“Poor electricity generation and supply has led many companies and entrepreneurs to fold up and relocate to other countries but government can remedy the situation by exploring other available sources of power generation that may be realisable from the combination of solar, wind and thermal energy to lift Nigeria out of the current worsening power situation,” it said.

They also urged the Federal Government to vigorously and genuinely pursue the exploration and exploitation of agro allied and solid minerals that abound in the country to bring about a quick recovery and reduce over reliance on oil.

While lauding President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts in combating corruption, the association urged him not to relent in the recovery of looted funds and prosecution of individuals who have breached the trust of the people.
