•Contractors get marching orders on Enugu roads

From Chidi Nnadi, Enugu

The South East Zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the zone is capable of generating 3,000 mega watts of power to help President Muhammadu Buhari achieve the 10,000mega watts he set for in the next three years.

The South East APC was reacting to the target set by President Muhammadu Buhari during the opening of the National Economic Council retreat in Abuja on Monday.

The spokesman of South East APC, Mr Osita Okechukwu, in a statement obtained by Daily Sun in Enugu yesterday said the 3, 000mw from the zone would come from Enugu Coal, 1,000mw; Ugwoba Gas, 500mw; Oguta Gas, 500mw; and Ukwa Gas Axis, 1,000mw.

He, therefore, reassured Nigerians that the target set by the president was realisable.

His words: “We appreciate Mr President’s total commitment to put an end to  the butt of jokes Nigerians make over incessant power cuts, high electricity bills, obsolete power equipment  and failure of the electricity privatisation exercise.

“It is our candid view that the target is achievable. For instance, given federal, state and local support and baring bureaucratic bottleneck, our study shows that the South East zone alone can generate 3,000 mega watts within the stipulated timeline set by Mr President.

“To actualise this noble target, we appeal to Mr President not to fall into the pitfalls of the previous regimes that adopted the nebulous policy that government has no business investing in the power sector, hence, abandoned the critical sector to private investors.”

He insisted that the 10,000mw of electricity target was achievable not only because of the political will of President Buhari but because of the abundant natural resources needed to boost it.

Meanwhile, Enugu Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has charged some  construction companies handling on-going road projects in the state to increase their pace of work towards the completion of their projects for commissioning as part of the activities marking his one year in office.
