The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights has called on the National Assembly to make more responsive laws that will address the socio-economic challenges of the country.

Mr Frank Tietie, the Executive Director of the advocacy, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja that although the National Assembly had spent two years in office, it had yet to make laws that would ease Nigerians pains.

Tietie, however, said the National Assembly had moved a step in the right direction by making public its budget for the first.

He said before now, the National Assembly budget had suffered so much opacity but the 8th assembly took a step in the right direction by publicizing its budget which was one of the major achievements.

He, nonetheless, said there was need for the legislators to respond quickly to the social and economic realities of Nigerians.

“ Although the National Assembly tried by making its budget public for the first time, it still needs to step up its game.

“This is because the National Assembly takes unnecessarily long time for to pass the budget and it has also not been very assertive in its role and function as a check to the executive.

Tiete said that because of the social and economic malaise that Nigeria had experienced one would have expected more responsive law making.

He said there was need for a law making that would be more dynamic in responding to the problems that Nigerians have.

He, therefore, urged the National Assembly to be more service-oriented to the people and strive to create a synergy among Nigerians and the executives.
