Benue CP warns policemen against collecting money for bail

From: Rose Ejembi, Makurdi

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, has warned policemen in the state against receiving money before granting a suspect bail, saying anyone caught in this act would face the full weight of the law.

CP Makama stated this while addressing stakeholders, in Makurdi, recently.

He insisted that bail was free, stressing that the sensitisation was in line with the recent launch of the ‘Bail is Free’ campaign in Minna, Niger State by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

Makama who noted that the global practice of policing was service to the people, also warned police officers to henceforth desist from collecting money for bail, adding that both the giver and taker of money for bail would be liable for prosecution when caught.

“The ethics of global policing is service to the people, not for extorting monies from the public in the name of bail. So, we want the public to be aware, assess the performance of the police and give us feed back so that we will serve them better. I want to tell all the police in the state that whoever is caught collecting monies in the name of bail will be sanctioned appropriately,” said Makama.
