For many men and women, nothing compares to the joy of being grand parents. The thrill of being a grandparent is accompanied with so much love and joy wrapped up in a little bundle they call babies.

Being a grandfather is a honour which time bestows on the fortunate. Unlike almost every other reward in life, one doesn’t have to work for it, but the feeling it brings can only be experienced and not explained.

Mrs. Kelechi Achu is a grandfather of seven children from his three children. He says the feelings of having a grandchild is likened to winning a lottery. The reality that he gets to hold his child’s child after a long time of handling children running around the house is a welcomed adventure.

Seeing his grandchildren run around his house, running to him for refuge whenever their parents lose their cool with them, and looking at him lovingly for his many stories, even as they fight to take spots on the chair with him make his life meaningful.

He is totally at their disposal. He creates time to play games, read stories and, most important of all, to listen to them blabber or talk about things many would consider inconsequential. If something is troubling any of them, particularly something in the parental home, he is entrusted with the secret.

“Their Christmas visit is a real treat for me. My grandchildren regard my village house as a home away from home and know where everything is. They keep me company while listening to my many stories. It gives me joy that they trust me and spend time with me.”

Looking after them sometimes can of course be tiring, and there are occasions when he is glad to hand them back to their parents.

Of course, their mischief is part of the fun and he regards it as part of a grandfather’s privilege to indulge them with special treats.

Mr.Achu says that the gift of grandchildren brings an unexpected glow. For him, being a grandfather has a very particular meaning because he lost his grandparents so early in life. So, he wants his grandchildren to have as many happy memories of their time with him as possible, because he has a few days left.

“My grandchildren melt my heart. Hearing their voices on the phone whenever their parents call give me joy. I have been a grandpa for a few years now. It seems like only yesterday that I held that little boy, my first grandchild for the first time eleven years ago.’’

Grandchildren are one of life’s greatest joys, we have the chance to teach and share all that we know with the next generation. Life as we know it becomes so much more special as we learn to see it through our grandchildren’s eyes. Mr. Achu feels so blessed to be alive to see them gather around him and spend their holidays with him.
