Assistant Inspectors General and commissioners of police have been told to ensure adequate security for worshippers, travelers and picnickers during Easter.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, gave the directive in a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole in Abuja on Thursday.
It directed all commissioners to personally ensure that all key and vulnerable points and all places of public resort are adequately and effectively protected.
The statement urged worshippers at churches to make conscious effort to know fellow members of their congregations to know who was a stranger.
It reiterated the need for worshippers to be alert to security and report all suspicious characters and observations to the police
The statement urged Christians to emulate and adopt the selfless lifestyle of Christ, and enjoined them to be open minded to issues of forgiveness, peace and harmonious co-existence.
It advised operators of motor parks, shopping malls and recreational centres to work very closely with the police and other security agencies as they strive to strengthen general security in their respective facilities.
“Arase, in the spirit of the season, salute officers and men of the police for their courage, dedication, tireless and selfless services to Nigerians and the country, especially, in the face of current challenges.’’
It restated the commitment of the police administration to reposition the force for greater efficiency, better welfare package and more conducive working conditions.
The statement enjoined Nigerians to continue to support the police with useful information that could assist it in tracking undesirable elements in the society.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in FCT, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, has ordered water-tight security at all worship centres, recreational centres and crowded places during Easter.
This is contained in statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Anjuguri Manzah in Abuja on Thursday.
It stated that Inalegwu directed all area commanders and divisional police officers to deploy officers adequately to the aforementioned points to ensure a hitch-free celebration.
The statement said that to complement the area commands and divisions, plainclothes and uniformed policemen should be deployed to man all entry and exit points in the territory.
It assured FCT residents of adequate security during Easter.
The statement enjoined residents to continue to partner with the command through the provision of timely information on situations that might require prompt police response.
