ANAN backs fight against corruption, whistle blowing

Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) on Tuesday, pledged its commitment to support the war against corruption and whistle blowing against erring public servants in Nigeria.
The association disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the 4th session of its Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme and orientation of new members in Kaduna.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the event, National President and the Chairman of ANAN, Alhaji Shehu Usman Ladan, said already ANAN has been in the forefront of whistle blowing long before the Federal Government’s intervention and will continue to support the government in its campaign for zero tolerance on corruption.
Explaining that the MCPD will aid in updating accountants with recent practices across the world while adding value to their job, Ladan also said the association has entered into partnership agreement with Independent Corrupt Practices and related offences Commission (ICPC) to expose any public service theft.
“The essence of this gathering is to retrain our members on the current happenings in the accounting world, so that they will remain relevant, knowledgeable and add value to your work places and the nation by extension. This is because things are changing and if you are not current, you will become obsolete in your working place.
“ANAN as an organisation has what you call ethics and standard committee that tries erring members and if they are found wanting, they will be sanctioned according to law. We have also been in the forefront of whistle blowing even before the Federal Government made it a policy.
“To show our commitment to the fight against corruption, ANAN has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact against Corruption and we have for many years sponsored media campaign on whistle blowing aimed at exposing corrupt practices in our polity,” Ladan added.
The president noted that ANAN recently established the Society for Forensic Accounting and Fraud Prevention (SFAFP) responsible for training, regulating and supervising accountants on forensic accounting and fraud prevention, adding that such initiative contributes to making society corruption-free and encourage professionalism.
Lauding efforts of the organisers for choosing the theme, “Strengthening Public Sector Financial Management in Time of National Economic Recession”, Kaduna State Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Suleiman Abdu Kwari, who represented the governor, said “Kaduna State government will implement the outcome of the association’s meeting, in ensuring a corruption-free and perfect service delivery in the state.”
