The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three policemen for allegedly engaging in gambling, popularly known as Baba Ijebu, and sharing money in public. Their arrest was sequel to the news making the rounds on the social media that “policemen stationed near Zenith Bank, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos, were seen counting bribe received and smoking.”

Police public relations officer in the state, SP Chike Oti, said: “Based on the allegation, Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal ordered their arrest, detention and trial. Meanwhile, preliminary investigation into the case revealed that the men were not counting bribes received as alleged but the money from the coupons they collected from a game of gambling they played, aka Baba Ijebu.

“The men are currently facing disciplinary action that could lead to reduction in rank or dismissal. It is wrong to engage in such distracting activity while on duty. CP encourages members of the public to always expose, albeit accurately, indiscipline and unprofessional conduct of policemen.”
