Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the National Assembly have asked National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff  to choose between, running for the presidential ticket in 2019 or stick with the chairmanship of the party.
The directive was handed to Sheriff at a meeting of the National Assembly caucus on Monday.
In a swift reaction, however, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Leo Ogor, dismissed the directive in a telephone interview with Daily Sun. He said the party has already decided on the matter by giving Sherif till 2018 to serve as chairman.
“As we speak, the committee we inaugurated has been disbanded. Reconciliation of aggrieved groups, which was the main issue the committee was meant to deal with, has been effectively resolved, which was made in consultation with the governors,” he said.
On Monday, Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio,  told newsmen on Monday that the PDP National Assembly caucus had inaugurated a 12-man committee to reconcile aggrieved parties.
Regardless, a ranking member of the National Assembly, who attended the caucus’ closed door meeting on Monday, told Daily Sun that lawmakers were seeking a firm promise from Sheriff before formally declaring support for him to continue as national chairman.
The lawmaker who declined to be named said the caucus believe that, with Sheriff as a sole candidate, “it is now expedient  to take action towards securing the future of our party.
“The truth is that we want Sherrif to agree to our proposal that he cannot, after being supported to become the substantive national chairman, now turn around to also contest for the presidential ticket of the party when the time comes.
“We were witnesses to the agreement that he was supposed to quit on May 21, yet, he is now the sole candidate for the position. We believe that, when the time comes, all qualified individuals should be allowed to run for the party’s presidential ticket…”
