No fewer than 2,000 people including children in three local government areas in Kano state have benefitted from a medical outreach organised by the Wheels of Hope Rising Foundation, an NGO.
The President of the organisation, Mr Temitayo Adigun, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Friday.
He said that Bichi, Kura and Tarauni local government areas benefitted from the scheme aimed at improving the health status of the people.
Adigun said that the theme of the three days outreach is; “Your Health Your Wealth.’’
The president said that the NGO was committed to creating awareness on personal preventive measure towards healthy living in the rural areas.
Adigun said that patients were being treated on the spot, while 31 patients with critical aliment were referred to the general hospital for immediate medical treatment.
He said that drugs and medical supplies were also distributed to the community’s health care centres in the areas.
Adigun said pregnant women and nursing mothers were also given 150 treated mosquito nets to protect mother and child against mosquito bite and two blood pressure kits were also given.
He explained that three kitted first aid boxes were given to health personnel to facilitate the treatment of emergencies cases because of the long distance between the communities and the nearest primary health care.
According to Adigun, the distance is estimated to be around 20kilometre between the community and the nearest primary health care.
“Rural residents experience barriers to healthcare that limit their ability to get the care they need.
“In order for rural residents to have sufficient healthcare access, necessary and appropriate services must be available which can be accessed in a timely manner.’’
Adigun said that four priority areas were identified during the outreach after discussions with members of the communities.
They include; access to affordable health care, transportation, emergency services and lack of adequate rural health workers.
“The outreach to Kano was great success because various critical health issues were attended to.
“ It is a bold step for us as a foundation to aim at improving the health status of people and creating awareness on personal preventive measures toward healthy living.
“The outreach was also a cross cultural intervention towards peaceful coexistence among the people Northern region of Nigeria.’’
The Foundation is a rural based NGO which focused on unlocking sustainability development through education for all initiatives and facilitating quality healthcare support.
The foundation, which has been in existence since 2008, also aims at giving hope to the underprivileged including people with disabilities in urban and rural communities. (NAN)
