… As stakeholders laud WAEC at 65

Eighteen-year-old former student of Redeemer’s International Secondary School, (Eden Place) Maryland, Lagos, Master Ayodeji Ayomikun Oluwafisayomi, has been honoured as the best candidate in the May/June West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) beating over 1, 552, 758 candidates nationwide.

At a colourful award ceremony held at  The Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, during the 65th Annual Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Master Ayodeji and two other candidates were rewarded for their academic feat during the May/June 2016 WASSCE.

Aside Ayodeji, who obtained 9A1s in the school exam to emerged the best candidate in Nigeria, 17-year-old, master Okorigba Ogheneuruno Sydney, formerly of Christ the King Catholic College, Odolewu-Ijebu, Ogun State placed second, with 9A1s, while 17-year-old Master Uwakwe Chiemeka David formerly of Chrisland College, Idimu, Lagos, also recorded 9A1s in the May/June 2016 WASSCE as the third best.

In the May/June 2016 WASSCE, Master Ayodeji with examination no 425142610 recorded 8A1s in Economic, Civic Education, Tourism, English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics with total T-score of 653.6921 for the candidate with the best subject including Mathematics and English Language.

Currently, Ayodeji is a student of the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy on full scholarship and has won many laurels, awards and prizes which include best overall pupil from primary 1 to 6 as well as the Head Boy, represented the school in various competition, came first in the Math Decathlon in 2015 after a tie breaker with a university student, head boy of the college 2015/2016 session, best graduating student 2016 and came first at the United World College scholarship final interview in Nigeria.

The second best candidate award went to Master Okorigba. In the school exams, Okorigba with examination no 4281116071 obtained the following grades: Geography 1, Civic Education 1, English Language 1, Mathematics 1, Biology 1, Chemistry 1, Physics 1 and Technical Drawing 1. He had a T-score of 646.8059.

According to his citation, Okorigba won the college one million naira award for the student with 9A1s, bagged Otunba Felix Igbodipe’s award for the best student with 9As, American Mathematics contest award 2015 and others awards. He is doing A’ Level at Columbia International College, Hamilton, Canada and hope pursue an engineering course in Mechanical Engineering Canadian university in September 2017.

The third best award went to 17-year-old former pupil of Chrisland College, Idimu, Lagos, Master Uwakwe with examination no 4250313118 and in the May/June 2014 WASSCE, he recorded eight A1s which include Civic Education, English Language, Further Mathematic , Mathematics1, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Fisheries.

Uwakwe has won several laurels, awards and prizes such as best overall pupil from primary 1-5, and in basic 9-12, won national Mathematics and Science Olympiad in Chemistry, won two scholarships for admission offer from two American universities and best overall behaved student 2015/2016.

Meanwhile, some stakeholders have commended WAEC for the quality service delivery it rendered to youths in member countries in the past 65 years and predicted that the future is bright for examination body.

Former Registrar to council, Alhaja Mulikat Bello gave kudos to the past and present staffs for their dogged commitment to the accomplishment of the council’s mandate and making it become as well as remain the leading setter and custodian of educational assessment standard in West African.

Immediate past Head of National Office, Mr. Charles Eguridu, said in the past 65 years, WAEC blazed the trail as the foremost examination body in Africa and served as a bridge across the culturally diverse people of West Africa.

Eguridu disclosed that WAEC achievements in fostering international cooperation among member states is outstanding and its impact in the provision of qualitative and valid assessment in the form of final exit examinations to both school and private candidates in the sub region.
